The edible water bottle is known as Ooho. It is a seaweed based capsule that takes plastic out of the equation. It is mainly created by ‘skipping rocks lab’ by using brown algae. So, it is 100% biodegradable and totally edible.
You just need to peel the skin and pop it into your mouth. The casing can be flavored or colored.
So, you can either eat it or throw it away. It is being tested at athletic events but the company hopes to bring it to the market soon. To create the bottles, spheres of ice are treated with a liquid form of the seaweed-derived membrane. When the membrane solidifies and the water melts, a portable, eco-friendly serving of packaged water remains. Each orb costs only 2 cents to construct.
Our goal is to create a waste-free alternative to plastic bottles and cups. Our proprietary material is actually cheaper than plastic and can encapsulate any beverage including water, soft drinks, spirits and cosmetics.
The consumption of non-renewable resources for single use bottles and the amount of waste generated is profoundly unsustainable. The aim of Ooho is to provide the convenience of plastic bottles while limiting the environmental impact.
The team at skipping rocks lab—made up of chemists, engineers, designers and business advisors–are continuing to pioneer the use of seaweed in other packaging uses, with a mission to become the leading global producer of seaweed-based packaging.
